Definition of Population Pyramid
A population pyramid is a composition of the population in a region or country that can be displayed in the form of a pyramid-like diagram according to age and gender.
Another definition of a population pyramid is a horizontal graph that presents population data in the form of a bar chart depicting the composition of the population based on age and sex.
The pyramid is arranged on vertical lines or coordinates that are used to indicate age groups starting from the age of 0-4, 5-9 and so on until the maximum age that can be reached by the population in a certain area region.
The male gender is on the left and the female gender is on the right. Horizontal lines are used to represent numbers, often in the millions but depending on the population size.
The population pyramid is not the same for each region or country. Although they have different shapes, basically the shape of the population pyramid can be divided into three, each of which reflects the characteristics of the population.

A region with a high birth rate and low death rate makes the region experience rapid population growth. This pyramidal shape is characterized by the fact that most of the population is in the young age group. Such as developing countries, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and India.
The characteristics of a pyramid or expansive population composition include:
- The number of population with young age (0-19 years) is relatively high, while the old age is low.
- The birth rate is much higher than the death rate.
- Relatively high population growth
- Most of them are in developing countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the People's Republic of China, Egypt and India.
Adult Population Pyramid (Stationary)
This population pyramid shape shows the birth rate is almost the same as the death rate or is stationary. Population growth tends to be steady. This pyramid depicts an almost equal number of young, adult and old population.
An example is developed countries that form a population pyramid, such as Japan and Singapore, as well as several other developed countries.
The characteristics of the composition of the stationary population include:
- Comparison of the number of population in the youth and adult age groups is relatively balanced.
- The birth rate is generally not very high, and the death rate is relatively low.
- Small population growth

Old Population Pyramid (Constructive)
The shape of this population pyramid shows a birth rate that is lower than the death rate or is constructive. The sharp decline in the birth rate resulted in a decrease in population growth.

The characteristics of a constructive population pyramid/composition include:
