The branch of chemistry that focuses on analyzing material samples is Analytical Chemistry. Chemical analysis is interpreted as a series of work or research to examine or also know or determine a content in a sample with a specific purpose. The series of work can take the form of determining the content of a component, composition, physical properties, chemical properties, function of structural compounds, and many others.
Definition of Analytical Chemistry
Analytical chemistry is a branch of chemistry that focuses on analyzing material samples to determine their chemical composition, structure and function.
In language, analysis can be interpreted as a review process in order to obtain data or conclusions in a work or on a particular matter. But here the meaning will be narrowed, that the analysis means an activity or activity carried out in the laboratory in examining the content of a substance in the sample.
While the notion of chemistry is a branch of science that studies the composition, structure, properties of substances and also materials related to their interactions, ranging from the atomic to molecular scale.
Types of Analytical Chemistry
Traditionally, analytical chemistry is divided into 2 (two) types, namely qualitative and quantitative.
Qualitative Chemical Analysis
Qualitative chemical analysis is a series of analytical work that aims to determine the existence (also identification) of an ion, element, or other chemical compound, whether organic or inorganic, in our sample analysis. Qualitative analysis aims to be able to determine the presence of a chemical element or compound, both organic and inorganic.
For example: suppose we have a sample of drinking water, and are asked to check whether it contains heavy metals or not. So to find out we do qualitative analysis techniques.
Quantitative Chemical Analysis
Quantitative chemical analysis is a series of activities or analytical work that aims to be able to determine the amount of an element or compound in a sample that we analyze. In quantitative analysis, the goal is to be able to determine the amount of an element or compound in a sample.
For example: suppose we get tempeh, then we are asked to determine the protein content of the tempeh. So to be able to find out we can do a quantitative analysis.
The difference between qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis
If we pay attention to the differences in qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis, the most common is the purpose and results of the analysis. Qualitative analysis
Qualitative analysis is determining whether or not a compound exists, but not its mass or concentration. The qualitative analysis does not count numbers.
Gravimetric analysis
Gravimetric analysis is determining the mass of an analyte by weighing a sample before and/or after undergoing several changes.
A common example is determining the mass of water in a hydrate by heating a sample to remove any water present. So there will be a difference in mass because the water molecules will be released.
Volumetric analysis
In this titration, there is the addition of reactants to the solution being analyzed until the equivalence point is reached. The most common type is the acid-base titration which uses various indicators that show a change in color. There are several kinds of titrations, for example in potentiometric titrations. The types of indicators used are different in order to achieve the equivalence point.
