You've probably heard many different names for interpersonal skills: social skills, interpersonal skills, or soft skills (sometimes with emotional intelligence).

In general, when you have strong interpersonal skills, your personal and professional relationships will be smoother and more manageable. They can communicate and empathize with others, making it easier for them to collaborate in whatever they do.

There is less conflict in this relationship because you can effectively figure out what the problem is and then work on solving it together.

How To Improve Interpersonal Skills

Here are some tips on how to develop great interpersonal skills.

1. Ask for Constructive Feedback

Before developing interpersonal skills, you need to know where you are lacking. The best way to find out is to check in person with the people closest to you: co-workers, bosses, friends, and family.

One approach is to show them a list of interpersonal skills in up and ask what skills they have and what skills they can use.

Caution: Be aware of your interpersonal skills when trying this. Open for feedback. Do not be offended or offended. You will hear things you don't want to hear. But that's what practice is for!

2. Active Listening

As previously mentioned, improving your interpersonal skills requires becoming a better listener. There are 6 steps to practicing active listening.

  1. Pay attention when other people are talking. Don't cut before it's done. Wait a second or two to make sure it doesn't get clipped, then pause and see if it actually finishes. Make eye contact and avoid fidgeting or multitasking. This is a non-verbal way of showing that you are really listening.
  2. Don't judge them or overwhelm them with your own ideas. Be open and willing to accept other people's points of view. You are not always right! (Even so, you still have to cooperate and compromise.)
  3. Reflect on what they would like to say and how they would feel. When a colleague says, "I don't know what to do," you might reflect and say, "I feel stuck."
  4. Ask as many questions as needed to clarify ambiguity or confusion. You can say: "I'll make sure I'm listening..."
  5. Paraphrase and repeat again to summarize what they said. This way, you can be 100% sure that you understand their point and argument the way they mean it.
  6. Share your thoughts – after the person has finished speaking and confirms that you have understood them correctly. There is a delicate balance. You want to communicate your thoughts while supporting others and working to solve their problems at the same time.

3. Communicate with Your Feelings

Developing interpersonal skills means you need a better understanding of others, but it also means a better understanding of yourself.

Understanding your own emotional reactions and triggers will give you greater control when working with others.

As you dig deeper, you'll find that understanding how you feel can be automatic increase your ability to empathize with others and put yourself in their shoes they.

And when you actively communicate and communicate your thoughts, feelings and ideas, you can do it more easily and effectively. The Harvard Business Review has a great article to help you understand emotions. The top three tips are:

  • Expand your emotional vocabulary. Different emotions have different "feel". The more words you consider, the better you will be able to navigate minor differences.
  • Consider how strong each emotion is. Are you very sad or just disappointed? You can also rate the intensity on a scale of 1-10.
  • Write about it. Set a timer for 20 minutes and explore what really makes you feel. Reflect and learn by using phrases like “I've learned” and “now I realize.”
