Definition of Watershed (DAS)
A collection of rivers in a basin system with a single outflow or estuary forms a watershed (DAS). The watershed is catchment area that enters the river water area. Watershed boundaries are measured by connecting the highest points between one river basin and another.
Currently, around eight million hectares of land in 36 watersheds in Indonesia are in a critical condition. Some forest areas, especially in the headwaters of the river, have turned into scrub and even bare. Until now, the damage to the watershed continues.
Factors affecting the watershed are the climate, the type of rock through which the watershed passes, the amount of water that falls into the channel when it rains. Sooner or later, rainwater collects in the grooves, depending on the shape of the slopes of the watershed. Within the river basin area there are natural formations such as meanders, floodplains, and deltas.
Calculation of the amount of rain in the watershed can be done using the following two ways;
1. Isohyet, is used if the catchment area is larger than 5000km². Isohyets are lines and maps connecting places that have the same amount of rainfall during a certain period.
2. Thiessen, is used if the shape of the watershed is not elongated and narrow, with an area of 1000 – 5000km².
The watersheds are divided into 3 areas, namely the upstream area, the middle area of the river, and the downstream area. Usually, the watershed in the upper reaches of the river is hilly and has steep slopes, so many rapids are found. This area is mostly used for plantation vegetable fields, or forests which are buffer zones. Around the river flow there are many residential areas.
DAS in the middle of the river, the situation is relatively sloping so that the communication transportation route is relatively easy. This area is a population activity, such as trade, industry, and is the center of the population. In the downstream area of the river, the watershed is a sloping and fertile area. Therefore, this area is used for settlements and agricultural areas such as rice, corn, coconut etc.
Examples of watersheds in Indonesia
Examples of watersheds in Indonesia:
1. Ciliwung watershed, which has upstream in Bogor and downstream in Jakarta.
2. Bengawan Solo Watershed, which has an upstream in Wonogiri and a downstream in Gresik.
3. Mahakam watershed, which has upstream in the Bawui Mountains and downstream in Samarinda.
