Now, let's go over the metrics you need to track. Here are the 5 most important YouTube factors to measure.
1. Watch Time
There's no denying that video views are an important metric to track when determining whether a video is successful or not. But they are far from the complete story. Views alone don't give you the insight you need to change your video strategy effectively.
Instead, it's best to focus on viewing time. Watch time is an estimate of the number of minutes people spend watching your content. YouTube uses these metrics to measure and predict the performance of your channel or videos.
Next to Views in the YouTube Analytics Overview tab, this is very important. Why does YouTube value watch time so much? Because it is the clearest indicator of how interesting and valuable a video is.
When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Does a view really count as a view if the viewer isn't interested enough to watch it? This is why watch time is a key driver of the YouTube algorithm.
So your goal is to get viewers to spend more time watching your videos. The best way to do this is to create better videos that more people want to see.
2. Audience Retention
Big. You want viewers to spend more time watching your videos, but how? You have to start by understanding how well each video is currently holding people's attention. That way you can identify what works and what doesn't.
Enter the viewing time. This metric lets you check the quality of your views. This lets you find the point in your video where people stop watching.
The image above shows an audience retention graph that decreases across videos as users leave. As you can see, the video is 5 minutes and 27 seconds long, but the average viewer is hooked in about 3 minutes and 50 seconds. It's about 70% of the video.
To use this tool, simply play the video and as the viewer leaves, a red line will follow the graphic throughout the video.
You can then see where people lost interest, identify what caused them to leave, and make sure they don't make the same mistake in future videos.
For example, did I say something offensive or boring that is not to the taste of the general public? Did your video lose momentum at some point or go off topic and lose interest?
You can also add a call to action (CTA) in the form of a YouTube card before this point to get more leads before the viewer dies. But that's not all.
You can also see which parts of the video are most interesting and what's going on in the video at that moment. You can then reproduce your success in future videos. Naturally, YouTube's algorithm favors high-viewing channels.
In addition to the standard view duration, you can also view relative view durations. It shows how well each video retains an audience compared to other YouTube videos of the same length.
Let's go back to the example above. 70% may not be ideal, but you can tell it's above average. This means that most 5 minute videos are no more than 70%. Not too bad.
3. Real Time Reporting
Real-time reports allow you to measure the number of views of your videos right after they are released to the public. You can see the last 48 hours and last 60 minutes of viewing for your entire channel or for a specific video.

For example, you posted a new video on Facebook, but your views haven't spiked. Then, 20 minutes later, the video was uploaded on Twitter, and the view count skyrocketed dramatically. Now you know that your Twitter audience is more receptive to certain content than your Facebook audience.
If this trend continues, we can assume that Twitter viewers prefer video content more than Facebook viewers. You can use this information to try to capitalize on their interests.

Go to the View Reach tab to see your top traffic sources and click the graph for more details. The second graph further breaks down external traffic sources. You can then use this information.

Alternatively, you can find a growing source of traffic and choose to invest more resources into growing it.
